Today's show begins and ends with two distinctive and legendary voices. Smokey Robinson, appearing with the vocal group Human Nature, needs no introduction: The legendary Motown vocalist's name speaks for itself. And the 7 Worlds Collide track closing the episode features vocals by Neil Finn, whose solo work and recordings with Crowded House had a tremendous mark on alternative rock.

Tracks 1, 9, 11 and 15 are courtesy of Mood Indigo Entertainment, which put me in the frankly cruel position of having to choose just one track from most of the albums represented. Tracks 6-7 and 13 come via the IODA Promonet and may be downloaded at the Blogger site for as long as their promotions remain in effect; tracks 4-5 and 10 come courtesy are FlipSwitch PR; and the remainder are courtesy of Ariel Publicity.
The 7 Worlds Collide track comes from a double album featuring some other big names in alternative rock, alt-country and the like: Besides brothers Neil and Liam Finn, it also includes former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, four members of Wilco, singer-songwriters K.T. Tunstall and Lisa Germano, and others.
Neil Finn and some friends did a 2001 live album under the name, largely comprised of previously released material from their respective backgrounds -- Eddie Vedder was on that recording -- and this year (joined by the Wilco cats and others) released the studio album of all-new material as a fundraiser for the charitable efforts of Oxfam International.
In today's Bizarro Files: It's the National Day of Reconciliaition in South Africa. Births include master composers, authors and playwrights, two highly influential science fiction authors whose works couldn't be much more different, and a prophetic, fearless comedian. Deaths include a pillar of the Blaxploitation genre, a beloved character actor and an iconic restarauteur. Also: The Tea Partiers who put today's tea-baggers to shame, Jimi Hendrix's first single, death by bad music and No. 1 songs good, bad and inexplicable.
Recent Celebrity Crush profiles: Former 24 co-star and upcoming Damages supporting player Reiko Aylesworth, singer and occasional actress Norah Jones and former Sports Night, Sliders, Ed and Numb3rs co-star Sabrina Lloyd.

So, I was trying to figure out what the heck a Chalica was, and why people were wishing me a happy one on Facebook, and discovered this site: UU Identity.
I know we've talked about what the UU faith is all about in this group before, and whether it's a faith at all, and whether we ought to try and get a little more together on what the core message of the faith is, and whether we already did that but people just don't understand it, and so on. So this seemed like the sort of thing that might be of interest (and it will also tell you what Chalica is, if you're interested, though not how to pronounce it, which makes me sad). This fellow has some theories about how to help UUs to all get to the same page about UUism, and some of them sound pretty good to me. Have you heard of this project, and what do you think about it?Current Mood: contemplative

There is a group that organizes the annual Day of Prayer for the purpose "to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, mobilizing the Christian community to intercede for America..."
If we UU's were to organize a alternate Day of Prayer what do you think the mission ought to be?Current Mood: curious

OK, so yesterday I'm running the "How can I Know what to Believe" curriculum in RE for 5 7th graders. We're going around the circle of asking each of them to comment on the difference between Creeds and UU Principles. The Creeds are on aa photocopied handout and the Principles are on a beautiful multicolored bookmark. The last Kid, D., says something like - and I paraphrase a little - "I know its only a metaphor, but while these Creeds are all black and white, and the principles are color, all the colors together make black and white..."
This was my first session with this age group, 7th and 8th graders, but I am really stunned at the level of their thinking. Makes me so optimistic for the future. |

Finals are next week. Today was our last concert. It was a choir concert of Christmas music. One and a half hours of pure Christmas music. Latin pieces, French, German, and English carols.
I sat beside a former student. She is a retired grandmother, now (I feel old, but she came back to school late in life). I remember her as a proud member of the political and religious right, but a friendly hard worker.
At the end, our choir director wished everyone "Happy Holidays." She and hubby both shouted back, just short of militantly, "Merry Christmas." Later, I wished her very happy holidays and she corrected me with Merry Christmas. I corrected her (as only an old teacher can do) I am including wishes for a Happy New Year and all the festive days between now and then with family and friends.
We will be attending a Singing Solstice Celebration on the 20th, Christmas Eve services on the 24th, and be driving home from visiting family and friends on New Years Day.
I'll wish my students a good break from classes.Current Mood: annoyed Current Music: Holiday Hymns
